Yes.  It’s official.  The 2010 International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival season will

run for a total of 35 days and nights including eight of them in North America as part of an exciting new venture in the USA.

The North American “leg” will be staged  in the historic town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania from June 20th – June 27th 2010 where it is scheduled to have a “starring role” in the annual Gettysburg Festival which last year attracted more than 20,000 visitors from across the USA.

What is the Gettysburg Festival?

The 2010 Gettysburg Festival is a ten-day arts festival offering more than 100 events – many free – by artists in disciplines ranging from visual arts, dance, theatre, music and culinary arts. It was established in 2007 in an effort to increase cultural tourism and arts education in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Children and education are prominently featured in an event which has quickly achieved national status.

The G & S content will provide this year’s “star” attraction for the theatre genre.  Most of the performances will take place in the Majestic Theatre at the Jennifer and David LeVan Performing Arts Center.  The theatre has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its historic connection with President Dwight D Eisenhower and First Lady Mamie Eisenhower.  The 800-seat theatre is currently celebrating the fifth anniversary of its $16.5 million transformation from a run-down movie theatre into a world-class performing arts centre.

There are certainly plenty of other attractions in and around the town. You can tour the Gettysburg National Military Park on horseback or Segway.  Experience the restored Cyclorama Painting. Walk in the steps of President Abraham Lincoln and remember those who gave all in Gettysburg at the Soldiers' National Cemetery. Tours are available to see the homes and town of the citizens of 1863 Gettysburg.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to enjoy theatre productions, concerts, wineries, and nature trails, see local orchards and charming small towns or take a guided Washington DC tour.

International visitors can fly into Baltimore, Washington or Philadelphia – and they are two hours away from Gettysburg.  North Americans have similar opportunities. AMTRAK go to nearby towns and we will look at bus transfers if there is sufficient demand.

Rich Wiley is the Festival Director in North America and can be contacted on (717) 683-2328 or by email: rich.wiley@gs-festival.co.uk

We can’t wait.  Come along and join us in Gettysburg for a fantastic week of history and Gilbert & Sullivan!
